A simple and transparent way to measure trail usage

Trailsense provides an easy way to measure visitor flows using small, off-grid sensor nodes. The system works without cameras and does not collect personal data.

Trailsense does not use cameras or any kind of visual recording. This means no images, no videos, and no possibility to identify individuals. The system only detects wireless signals that devices send out anyway.

Detected signals are converted into aggregated visitor counts. Trailsense measures how a trail is used without storing personal identities or following individual visitors.

Compact off-grid sensor nodes are designed for locations without existing power or network infrastructure, making them suitable for remote trails and outdoor environments.

Small sensor nodes and a simple data workflow make it practical to begin with one location and extend the system across additional trails as requirements grow.

How the system works

Trailsense detects anonymous WiFi signals from nearby devices and converts them into aggregated visitor counts.

Tested in a real alpine environment

The system was tested in a pilot project on a hiking trail leading to the Arzler Alm.

Two sensor nodes were installed:

  • One directly next to an existing AI-based counting station
  • One along the trail to measure visitor movement

This allowed us to validate the system and compare the results with an established solution.
